Georgia College & State University (GCSU) hosed its annual state science competition from kindergarten through fifth grade on March 9, 2023.  It is the largest group of elementary students since the fair started in 2018.

This year, 49 school districts across Georgia were represented and sent over 400 students to present over 300 different projects.  All of the projects were recognized as winners within their local school areas and districts.  This year, several new school systems from North and Southeastern Georgia were in attendance for the first time.  Other counties participating included Baldwin, Bibb, Jones, Monroe, Washington and Wilkinson.

“The competition started 6 years ago and Georgia College was the only regional competition in the state still holding K-5 fairs. Other regions wanted to send their students to us,” said Dr. Catrena Lisse, director of the university’s Science Education Center.

This year’s projects included, investigating the strength of triangle trusses to build stronger bridges, exploring the chemistry of making big bubbles, using electric motors to improve transportation in metro areas, studies of aero and thermodynamics, just to name a few.

The students started out showing their exhibits at 8am that morning and the judging started at 10:00am and was complete about noon.  The awards ceremony started around 5:00.  And guess what happened next . . . . . .
